How to Try CBD for Depression

Image
Medically reviewed by Zara Risoldi Cochrane, PharmD, MS, FASCP on July 29, 2019 — Written by Kimberly Holland Cannabidiol ( CBD ) is a type of natural compound known as a cannabinoid. Cannabinoids are found in the cannabis plant. Cannabis plants are sometimes called hemp or marijuana, depending on their level of  tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) , another cannabinoid. THC is associated with a “high.” CBD, however, does not cause psychoactive effects like marijuana does. CBD can be derived from the hemp or marijuana plant. CBD has seen a surge in popularity in recent years, as new research explores its  potential health benefits . Some research suggests that CBD oil and other CBD products may be beneficial for symptoms of  depression . How can it help? If you’re looking into using CBD for therapeutic purposes, it’s important to understand that the research around CBD is limited. There have been a lot of studies in the last decade, but most of them were done using anim

CBD vs. THC: What Are the Differences?

Image
By  Dr. Josh Axe, DC, DMN, CNS The Main Difference Between CBD and THC CBD (cannabidiol) and THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) are both compounds that come from the ancient plant  Cannabis sativa  and can be found in  cannabis oil . THC is the compound in cannabis that produces intoxicating effects, while CBD is the major non-intoxicating component in the plant species. Chemical Structure The chemical composition of CBD and THC are exactly the same, with both containing 21 carbon atoms, 30 hydrogen atoms, and 2 oxygen atoms. The major difference between the structure of these compounds is the arrangement of a single atom. Considering that an atom is a very, very tiny particle, this small difference in chemical structure makes a huge impact when it comes to the effects of these compounds. Psychoactive Effects Here’s the major difference between THC and CBD: THC has what can be called “unwanted” psychoactive effects that give you that high, euphoric feeling, while CBD has non-i

How to Use CBD Oil for Relief

Image
By  Christine Ruggeri, CHHC Cannabis has been used for relief for thousands of years and CBD , one of the active compounds in the cannabis plant species has been especially appreciated. In ancient Chinese texts dating back to 2900 B.C., cannabis is described as a form of relief from occasional joint discomfort. The plant was also used in combination with wine prior to some procedures. And in India, around 1000 B.C., cannabis was valued as an overall health supporter. Although many compounds of the cannabis plant were used in ancient health approaches, including the psychoactive compound THC, we know from more recent studies that CBD is a soothing powerhouse on its own. Pain relief is one of the most well-known  CBD oil benefits , and for good reason, as the compound works to suppress certain processes and signals in the brain to provide relief That’s why many consider using CBD oil . With many seeking relief from occasional discomfort, it’s about time we look to our ancesto

What is CBDA (Cannabidiolic Acid) & what are the benefits of this cannabinoid?

Image
By Jacqueline Havelka CBDA (cannabidiolic acid) is one of many compounds produced by cannabis and hemp. Abundant in the live plants of CBD varieties, it converts to the better-known cannabinoid  CBD (cannabidiol)  over time and when exposed to heat. Cannabinoids  are cannabis compounds that interact with our bodies to produce medical and recreational effects, from pain and stress relief to euphoria. You’ve likely heard of CBD and THC—these are the most widely known cannabinoids, and both originally stem from the  precursor “mothership”  cannabinoid known as  CBGA (cannabigerolic acid) . CBGA converts to three major cannabinoid precursor compounds, depending on which plant enzymes are activated to direct the synthesis: THCA  (tetrahydrocannabinolic acid) CBCA (cannabichromenic acid) CBDA (cannabidiolic acid). When  decarboxylation  occurs by exposing the cannabis plant to either heat or sunlight, CBDA converts to CBD. In other words, CBDA is the raw form or predeces
